BlackBerry Support – Updated

It is Snakehead Games Inc. policy to do our very best for our players and not to take on an offering if we believe that may be compromised.

We had recently concluded we may not be able to continue developing mobile games for Blackberry devices as we did not have access to required underlying libraries.

Soon after this conclusion, we had a chance to meet with the team at BlackBerry and the news is promising – there are indeed libraries that should work, and if there are issues we can talk directly with the BB AIR team now.

And that really is great news; we want to support a local company, and I’m sure they feel the same way. Directly or indirectly, all players of SHG games will benefit from this.

We will continue to offer support for players using the web browser on a Blackberry for Star Pirates, 2165: Spy Battle and Gates of Camelot.

Zombie Moon has been in production for quite a period of time and already has plans for deployment to Blackberry Playbook and Z10 – we hope to have a definitive answer in the near future.

Bayshore Hobbies Closing – Sad Day for Hamilton

Salute1

Bayshore Hobbies is closing.

For those who might not know, Snakehead Games is the largest gaming company in Hamilton, Ontario, and we pride ourselves has being members of the local gaming community.   We grew up here, and our friends did too.  Back in those days (yes, the world was sepia toned then), there were just a few places gamers like us could get stuff.  Leisure world in the Burlington Mall, a few others, and then Bayshore Hobbies.

For a time, Bayshore hobbies was the cornerstone of that community, and even with all the changes, we still went there for games.

As Greg Ferguson, CEO of Snakehead Games said,

Without Rose and her iconic store Bayshore Hobbies, Snakehead Games Inc. (Hamilton’s biggest video game company) would probably not exist today.  Rose always greeted you with a smile and she always made time.  We loved visiting and finding the newest board games and cool things she had.  The genuine joy she had for sharing cool new offerings was so evident and it was contagious.  Bayshore Hobbies and its loss leaves a gap in our hearts but also leaves us with some great memories of the past 30 years.

Bayshore hobbies was one of the last of the true hobbyist stores, ranging from Board Games, Comics, Pen and Paper RPG’s, war-games, modeling and even Kite building. This was the place for Hamiltonians to supply their hobbies, and network with like-minded individuals.

Located just down the road from McMaster University, it was for many the gateway into new interests as they began new chapters in their life, myself included.

Sadly, amidst changing tends, they will be closing on 2013-07-27 after 33 years of operation.  A chapter of the Hammer-towns gaming, hobbyist, and dare I say, “Nerd” culture, closes with them.

Bayshorehobbies

Thank you Bayshore.

p.s.  On a lighter note, we believe the “No Farting” sign in the store is due to friends of the Founders of Snakehead Games.  No, really.

Milkman Games

We want to give a shout out to a really solid development crew at Milkman Games.  Some of our mobile games are built using Adobe AIR and this, while a great toolset, also brings some challenges with it.  A terrific provider of extensions there can be found at Milkman Games.  Why would we, a game company, bring attention to a different game company?

The quick answer is two-fold:  gratitude, respect.  Milkman Games has earned both of these from us and for those of you doing Adobe AIR development, we give an unqualified recommendation for you to check them out.

Writing Contest!

Have you heard the word, pirates? Snakehead’s Writing Contest is in full swing – not only that, but there’s now an early bird special as well!

They’ve pledged 1000 points for everyone who gets a submission in before September 1st – more if enough people are in by that time. I don’t know about you, but I can feel my writing fingers getting itchy just thinking about it…

Mobile Games

It’s not like racing from one end of the system to the other and blowing anything in my path up ever gets BORING, dear Journal, don’t get me wrong. But there ARE a few boring stretches in between the explosions, and the hold can only carry so much rum. So the shipboard AI said I ought to look at some “mobile games”.

And wouldn’t you know it, Snakehead Games has come through for us there! Their debut app “Word Nerds: Tap & Spell Words” is the most fun I’ve ever had without a laser pistol in each hand. Lets me feel smart, those ants are just SO adorable, and just to top it all off, it didn’t cost the crew – I mean, ah, it didn’t cost ME a dime!

I also checked out ZipZap as well – from Industry Corporation, friends of Snakehead Games. I can appreciate some asteroid exploding hijinx, lemme tell ya.

Coliseum

Speaking of feeling smart, I learned something else today. Seems you don’t need plasma cannons to beat up your friends – virtually, of course! – and have fun doing it. Coliseum has seen some HUGE updates recently, with their soon-to-be-famous Foederati system finally being implemented.

Hmm…recruiting my friends to help me take revenge on those who wronged me, and all to the delighted roars of a ferocious crowd of ancient romans, huh? Sign me up!

Revenge, you ask? Oh yes. The first parts of the tutorials, backstory and additional questing is being activated too. Is it a good time to be a Lanista or what?

Snakehead Roster

And how did all this happen? Well, thanks to this nice Taerdin fellow, who was recently added to the Snakehead stable of employees after a sterling internship. Why can’t MY swabbies work half this hard? Well, I suppose if I actually bothered to pay them any better that’d be an incentive…

Star Pirates Updates

Of course, we Free Captains haven’t been forgotten either. Lots of little upgrades here and there to make our lives easier and more interesting, as well as more and better commissions piling up. They certainly seem to be getting ominous. I wonder if there’s something big coming around the corner?

Well, at least ONE big thing definitely will be. You didn’t hear it from me, dear Journal, but the scuttlebutt is a second Ascension story might finally be on the table, with work starting in early September. I can hardly wait!

Now, let’s see…was there more? Lasers, rum, explosions…heh, sounds fine to me. Don’t mind if I do~

This is Captain Athena, signing off for now!

Words, Swords and the Weird

Plenty more big announcements for Friday, Snakehead fans.

First of all, Word Nerds is back with a vengeance, available here for the Android. iPhone version updates are in the pipeline, and we’re aiming for an iPhone version around August 1st.

Next, Foederati! Our big update to Coliseum is ready at last! Make allies and build your hidden, private army as you plan for revenge against those who betrayed you and your family. And how does that story, you ask? Well, check Coliseum out, and Phase 2 will be there sooner than you think~

Finally, you haven’t forgotten about our writing contest, have you? Fangoria certainly hasn’t!

May The Fourth etc etc

On this momentous day of days, Snakehead fans, we’re catching you up on this week and the last before we return to process of getting this website up to snuff. It’s been a while in the works, and we think you’ll be pleased with the results. But that’s in the future. For now, the present and near-past.

Plenty going on in the past two weeks. Ask Spybattle players about shoes, rocket-powered or not, telephone-equipped or otherwise. Or ask the Star Pirates about zombies. (Man, that bite mark STILL itches something terrible…and I can’t quite shake an irrational craving for headcheese…)

But the biggest thing is our sponsorship/partnership with the witty, thought-provoking and unfailingly hilarious Basic Instructions. Easily one of the best comics out there and, in this scribe’s humble opinion, criminally underappreciated. Why not go on over there and say hello? And tell ’em Snakehead sent you.

Plenty to come, Snakehead fans. But we’re keeping a few surprises in the wings. Expect this blog to be quiet a little longer as we diligently hammer out the new site design. Until then? A couple week’s worth of notable achievements…
